There is a current Demolition Permit from the Department of Buildings
to the Archdiocese to tear down St. Brigid's. We, St. Brigid's parishioners,
neighbors, and friends can't let this happen on our watch. Here's what you can
do to help.
Step Up! Spread the word that St. Brigid's, the Famine Church of the
Lower East Side -- a unique jewel of Irish history in America -- is in grave
peril and must be preserved. Contact fraternal and cultural organizations,
media, politicians, the Archdiocese of New York, your family and friends --
anyone who cares about our history. It's time for all to step up and get
involved to save St. Brigid's.

Those working to save St. Brigid's see it having a dual life as a heritage
center -- a landmark that would commemorate the famine Irish who helped lay the
groundwork for other groups to follow -- and a functioning house of worship. The
Lower East Side is rich with monuments of other ethnic groups, but the Irish can
lay claim to little in the area besides this church.
Millions Must Be Raised. The Archdiocese of New York cannot bankroll
heritage preservation efforts. Concerned Irish-Americans and friends in the
community need to raise the money to repair the building and operate the secular
side of this historical project. Leaders must step forward as worthy custodians
and join us to form a board of directors. This mission requires preservation
expertise, philanthropists, the grassroots of Irish America, our captains of
industry, our friends in Ireland. It is our responsibility to lead and pay for
the preservation and future of St. Brigid's.
Development Alternatives. The Committee to Save St. Brigid's is
reaching out to developers to come up with real estate plans that would preserve
the church and develop the property, which faces beautiful Tompkins Square Park
in the heart of the East Village. We seek development strategies that will be
built to neighborhood scale and would be a financially attractive option for the
Archdiocese of New York.
